Congratulations you have shifted from staring at your TV to staring at (probably) your phone.
You’re also probably one of the ~250 million people in the US with subscription services. I bet you have a show you love to watch, but how has that show transcended into your everyday life?
2020 showed us that if you trap someone to their couch and force some lifestyle pieces down their throats mixed in with some drama, consumer patterns will change.
Beep Beep, Vroom Vroom
In 2019, Netlfix kicked off Formula 1: Drive to Survive which has continued to draw interest most notably shown by the recent Baku City Circuit becoming the most-watched race of the last two years in the US, with a peak audience of 1.04 million despite starting at 5 AM on the West Coast.
F1 US viewership trended up with 2021’s average up 50% in 2020 & up 36% in 2019.
Time 2 Organize (using Container Store stuff)
At the end of last year, Get Organized with The Home Edit made headlines for doubling the Container Store’s stock price in a week. Not only did stockholders get #gains but it also lead to people like this Twitch influencer looking to buy stainless steel lazy susan’s & wicker storage bins.
Chess Sells
Obvious favorite is Queen’s Gambit and the role it had in surging interest in chess (possibly benzos too) around the world. Check out this graph from exploding topics which analyzes millions of searches, conversations, and mentions across the internet.
What’s next?
This trend of people gaining interests is not going anywhere so I decided to play fortune teller, look ahead at some of the series on the books and guess the effect it will have on the public’s buying decisions
Naomi Osaka coming to Netflix July 13
This three-part docuseries stars 4-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka who recently gained recognition for becoming the highest-paid female athlete through endorsements and opening up about her mental health.
While she is well known around the sports world, this show will catapult her to grab the attention of your everyday American looking for an awesome success story.
In anticipation, I recommend you go ahead and sign up for those tennis lessons, stockpile tennis balls and buy one of her sweet beanies*.
*Spoiler they have already sold out and are now $150 on eBay
The Lord of the Rings coming to Amazon later this year
J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1954 banger makes its return to the real world with the first of five seasons set way before Frodo was partying in the Shire.
As a prequel, not only is it going to draw in die-hards, it will connect with a whole new audience who can enter the LOTR universe especially considering Fellowship of the Ring came out 20 years ago.
Now’s the time to dig up your old hobbit swag, buy the wedding ring you’ll need for your 2026 vows before they sell out, and maybe even read the books so you have some idea wtf is going on in Middle Earth.
Or just look at this image I found on Pinterest
Physical coming to Apple TV+ June 18
This dramedy is set in the ‘80s and tells the story of a woman who leaves her boring life by getting fit the only way one got fit in that time: aerobics.
This is a no-brainer for taking the public interest by storm, especially the kids who are constantly looking for something ridiculous to wear. Gen Z is going to eat this up. Can you imagine how well scrunchy socks, multi-colored tracksuits, and mom mullets would do on TikTok?
